Best Practices for Powering SoundGrid Setups On and Off

Jun 24, 2026

Here are basic ground rules for powering your SoundGrid Setup on and off in a controlled manner.

Turning the system off:

  1. Quit your SoundGrid host application/s (in the Setup page or clicking ‘X’) and wait for the application to fully terminate. If you are using an eMotion LV1 Classic Mixing Console, shut down the system using the Shutdown button in the Setup window. This allows the system to shut down gracefully and is the recommended shutdown method. It may take several seconds for all components to shut down completely. Wait until the unit has fully powered off before switching off or disconnecting AC power.
  2. Power down each SoundGrid Server by holding the front power button until the server powers down.
  3. Power down your SoundGrid interface using the power switch. If you’re using a SoundGrid expansion card in a console, power down the console per the manufacturer’s recommendations. If your setup includes more than one SoundGrid interface, it's good practice to turn off the SoundGrid clock master last.
  4. Power down your computer via the operating system’s Start (Win) / Apple (Mac) menu. Do not use the power button.
  5. If your network switch has a power button, power down the network switch.
  6. If your system is powered via a main power switch, you can now safely power down the system with the power switch’s button.

Turning the system on:

  1. Power on your SoundGrid interface/s using their power switches. If your setup includes more than one SoundGrid interface, it's good practice to turn on the SoundGrid clock master first.
If you’re using a SoundGrid expansion card in a console, power on the console per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  2. Power on your SoundGrid Server*.
  3. Power on your host computer*.
If you are using an eMotion LV1 Classic Mixing Console, ensure the unit is connected to AC power, then power on the system using the 'soft' power switch located at the top of the rear panel. For maximum power redundancy, connect both IEC power supply cables whenever possible. Note that the switches on the mains power connectors control the redundant power supplies but do not power on the console.
  4. If your network switch has a power button, power on the network switch.
  5. Once all physical devices have finished booting, launch your SoundGrid application. This will ensure that the system is properly established and will retain all defined clock assignments when the application is launched.

* SoundGrid Servers and Axis computers are configured to power on automatically as soon as they detect a current.

If any SoundGrid interface/s are clocked externally (via WC/DigiLink/Digital):

  1. First power on the system’s clock master.
  2. Proceed with powering on the rest of the devices in the setup as described above.
  3. When powering down, it is recommended to power down the SoundGrid clock master last.
In standalone eMotion LV1 Classic Mixing Console systems, the console is typically configured as the clock master. In systems that include additional SoundGrid or digital audio devices, the clock master may be an external I/O device. Always power on the clock master first and power it off last.
